DESCRIPTION
Northwest Construction served as the General Contractor for WSDOT on this project, overseeing the successful installation of a new box culvert and associated streambed work crossing SR 96, a five-lane roadway. The construction took place during the summer months of 2023.
SCOPE OF WORK
This project involved the replacement of an existing 72” culvert with a 20-foot-wide box culvert on SR 96. Spanning across five lanes of traffic, much of the work required multiple extended road closures or night shifts. Our team excavated across SR 96 in two phases to maintain traffic flow.
A distinctive aspect of the project involved shoring one side of the culvert excavation to protect an existing live sewer parallel to the culvert. Collaboratively, Northwest Construction and Malcolm devised a shoring system, comprising cantilevered piles spaced every 8’4” across SR 96. During excavation, our team installed 8’x20’ steel sheets between the piles, serving as temporary lagging, which were removed during the culvert backfill process. Subsequently, piles were cut down two feet below the roadway surface and abandoned in place.
